Optopus Engineering

Optics experiments for home and school

Optopus is a group established by PhD students at the University of Glasgow and University of Edinburgh, dedicated to providing science education activities for students. The group was formed during the COVID-19 outbreak with the goal of creating physics outreach for children unable to attend school.

Optopus has teamed up with CISMA to create a series of free, fun, smartphone science experiments that you can do in your kitchen with just a few household objects.

What's with the octopus?

When our group first formed, we wanted to think of a fun name that reflected the activities we were creating. We decided it would be nice to include the prefix for sciences related to optics (Opto-) and we decided on plus as a suffix, just because it sounded cool. Of course, it's easy to accidentally say octopus instead, so we combined the two words.
